New Delhi: Mounting an attack on the Congress, BJP said on Thursday that ‘the extended hand of the 10 Janpath was working to help Christian Michel’, the alleged middleman in Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal.

‘Congress is standing rock solid behind Michel. This is a calculated move to see that Christian Michel is protected,’ BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said in a press conference at party headquarters here.

The Congress party is completely rattled after the extradition of Christian Michel, he said, adding that. ‘They know the reason. They had sent their team to defend Christian Michel.’

‘The family in Congress is getting sleepless nights,’ he said.

Michel, who was extradited from the UAE on Tuesday night, is being defended by three lawyers — Aljo K Joseph, a Congress activist, Indian Youth Congress, Vishnu Shankar, son of Kerala leader Chittar Madhu and Sriram Prakat, a former NSUI leader– All three have worked under big Congress lawyers like Salman Khurshid and Kapil Sibal, he said.

‘Congress has appointed its pointsmen to save Michel,’ he said, adding that BJP wanted to save the country’s money while the whole Congress party is trying to protect Michel.

Yesterday, in an interview Michel has said somebody has asked me to represent Michel, Dr Patra said.

‘Joseph categorically said “Somebody” asked me to appear for Middleman Christian Mischel ..question is who is the “Somebody” in Congress? In a party where everyone apart from the “Somebody” is a “Nobody”?

‘ There are only two somebody in the Congress and rest are nobody. It is no rocket science to guess who is somebody,’ Dr Patra said.

Cleverly, the Congress has projected small names, who have worked with experienced lawyers of the party, he said.

Joseph was expelled on Wednesday night from the party as he did not consult the party and acted in his individual capacity.

Dr Patra said this drama of being expelled , they have seen earlier.

‘Why not withdraw Joseph from the case,’ he asked, alleging that Congress wants its own people in the case so that it gets full information.

The Congress party was making a plea to the court through his lawyers that Christian Michel does not need remand, he stated.

New Delhi/Rae Bareli: Breaking his silence since the major row triggered by Congress on the Supreme Court verdict on Rafale, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flayed the principal opposition party for seeking to raise questions on the credibility of the highest court of the land.

“Our government is accountable to thousands of families of soldiers in the country…not to one family only,” Prime Minister told a large gathering at Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency.

“For them (Congress party and its associates), country’s Defence Ministry does not speak truth. Defence Minister is also a liar. Air Force top officers are liars. Even French government is not telling the truth; and today they even find fault with the highest court of the land,” Prime Minister said.

Referring to the repeated allegation of irregularities from Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi in the Rafale deal especially aftermath the Supreme Court verdict, Mr Modi said in every defence deals and pacts since Independence, the Congress party has done business with foreign middlemen.

“They have always had business with ‘Mama’ maternal uncles and other uncles,” he said in reference to Italian Ottavio Quattrocchi vis-a-vis Bofors scandal during Rajiv Gandhi era and Christian Michel, who was arrested in the UAE and extradited to India on December 4 in connection with AgustaWestland chopper deal.

In this context, he recited some lines from Ramcharit Manas and said the Congress leaders seemed to have relied heavily on the saying – Jhoot hi lena, jhoot hi dena, jhoot hi bhojan aur jhoot hi chabana (For such people, it is falsehood that thrives everywhere)”.

But he asserted that no matter how much lies is spread, in the ultimate truth only will triumph.

“Congress party’s approach to defence preparedness will never be forgiven by the country. After Kargil conflict forces had recommended for upgradation of Air Force preparedness. The Congress party was in power for 10 years, yet it did nothing,” Prime Minister said.

“Why this was not done….under whose pressure?,” Mr Modi wondered.

Prime Minister referred to Quattrocchi on Bofors and in respect of Christian Michel – the alleged middleman in AgustaWestland chopper deal, he described Michel as “another uncle” of Congress leaders.

“Michel has been arrested and extradited into India….And we all have seen how the Congress party did not waste any time and deputed its own lawyer to defend Michel,” Prime Minister said.
