Short Summary

  1. Drive against drunken driving fetch good results
  2. 315 people booked last night
  3. Licences of offenders would be suspended

Team The Goa Spotlight

Panjim: In what can be the biggest operation against drunken driving, Police squads were spread across the State’s Highways and internal roads last night checking all the drivers whether they were on the steering wheel after consuming liquor.

The drive that was carried for more than four hours fetched 315 offenders across the State while several hundred more cases related to riding without helmet or tinting the glasses of the vehicle were booked.

The operation was jointly conducted by State Traffic Police and local Police Stations who were armed with Alcometers to check the breathe of driver. When caught, they were booked, their licence was seized and they were not allowed to drive till they arrange for a next driver, who is not drunk.

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dinraj Govekar said that the checks were conducted to curb accidents due to drunken driving on the roads of the State. He said that the drive was meticulously planned to ensure that those sober drivers are not put to inconvenience.

And those funny chaps!

The team of Goa Spotlight was taking rounds of all the points where police were checking the breaths of the drivers. While majority of them passed the test and went home happily, there were some habitual offenders, who were getting scot-free all the time but were caught this time.

Many tried to reason it out with the police after being caught in an inebriated condition. The usual excuses that were given includes “mhaka dotorak cough syrup gheopak layla” (doctor has asked me to take cough syrup). They were pretending that the alcohol content in cough syrup was making alcometer scream ‘liquor, liquor’

Another reason was that “Saib! Ekuch pint marlya mure” (Sir! I had only one pint of beer). They were tried to excuse themselves claiming that one pint does not mean drinking or drunken driving.

Third reason was the usual request. “Asu re Saib! Please! Next time Piun Chalayna” (Sir! Let it be! Next time I won’t drink)

But all the excuses were not entertained by policemen on duty who were always surrounded by media and their cameras catching them.

Dry Gatari for many

Usually a day or two before Shravan month of Hindu calendar starts, people indulge into heavy drinking as for next 30 days they have to be teetotaler. The day is called as “Gatari” (means Guttar) as people presume that it is the day when you drink so much that you might be found in a gutter. But the drive spoilt ‘Gatari’ of many people.
