Corinthians missed many chances in the 0-0 draw with Deportivo Cali, including a rare missed penalty by Fábio Santos, and followed an uncomfortable event on Wednesday night. Since 2018, Timão has not been able to score a goal as a visitor away from home.
The last goals away from Itaquera were in the 7 to 2 over Deportivo Lara, in that edition of the tournament. Since then, four matches have been played without hitting the opponents’ net as outsiders.
Since winning the competition in 2012, the club played 20 times away from home and did not score in half of them. Apart from the rout in Venezuela, he maintained an average of less than one goal per game away from home.
The low number of correct shots by Corinthians in all these matches stands out. In the first of the series, against Colo-Colo, in 2018, for example, there were only two shots towards the Chilean team’s goal.
The best performance in this regard, alongside the clash on Wednesday, was in the first leg of the preliminary round of Libertadores in 2020, against Guaraní, in Paraguay. On the occasion, in addition to hitting the post, Timão put the opposing goalkeeper to work on four other opportunities.
In Colombia, Timão also had four accurate shots on goal, in addition to having missed four great scoring opportunities – against only one against Guaraní. Against Always Ready, performance well below expectations, without great chances and only two kicks in the direction of the rival goal.
