In live, Bolsonaro cries out for Petrobras (PETR4) not to raise prices anymore

Shortly before the announcement of Petrobras’ results (PETR3;PETR4), President Jair Bolsonaro made appeals for the company not to raise fuel prices in Brazil again.

Screaming, during a live broadcast on social media, the president said that the profits recorded recently by the company are “a rape”, benefit foreigners and who pays the bill is the Brazilian population. However, he ruled out interfering with the company.

“If you have one more raise (in fuel prices), can break Brazil. And the people at Petrobras don’t understand, or don’t want to understand. We know they have laws. But we appeal to Petrobras not to raise prices,” said Bolsonaro, who also called the state-owned company’s profit “abusive” and classified it as a “crime”. “If fuel prices increase again, Petrobras’ name will go down in the mud,” he added.

“I know that (Petrobras) has shareholders. But who are the shareholders? US pension funds. We’re funding fat pensions in the United States. Petrobras, we are at war. Petrobras, do not raise the price of fuel any more. Your profit is rape, it’s absurd. You can no longer raise fuel prices anymore!”, continued the president, in the live.

Bolsonaro made the criticisms shortly before Petrobras released the results for the first quarter, when the company had a profit of R$ 44.561 billion. This value is 3,718% higher than that recorded in the same period last year. Minutes earlier, he had said that “sources say that Petrobras’ profit for this quarter could reach R$ 40 billion”.

After a string of criticisms, Bolsonaro acknowledged that he had gone too far and apologized to Petrobras. He also reinforced that he will not interfere in the company. “I don’t run Petrobras. There’s a poll there saying that 70% are in favor of the government interfering in Petrobras. This is irresponsibility,” he said.
