Stephen Strange is back in theaters in yet another epic chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Long awaited by fans, the film brings a series of surprises, easter eggs, cameos and, as always, several clues to the future of the franchise in cinema. In this context, even subtle Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene may have anticipated what the next big saga of the MCU will be.
Caution: The following text contains spoilers for Doctor Strange 2.
Understand Doctor Strange’s Post-Credits Scene in the Multiverse of Madness
After the film’s animated credits are shown, we are surprised by Strange’s meeting with Clea, played by Charlize Theron, in the middle of New York City. And for those who don’t know, this character is more important than it seems to the Sorcerer Supreme mythology. That’s because, the mage created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko is, in fact, the hero’s great love interest in the comics.
Also, Clea comes from the Dark Dimension ruled by her UNCLE Dormammu. That is, she is related to the villain of Doctor Tin that we saw in the hero’s first solo movie!
Having already followed Sorcerer Supreme from this dimension (and also from Earth 616 when Strange went missing), the character debuts in MCU tearing reality to open a portal precisely to the Dark Dimension. And more: summons the hero warning that he has provoked an incursion. And this is where it all gets really insane. After all, even though it has already been mentioned at other times, this simple reference may have confirmed what will be the next big saga in the MCU: the secret wars.
That’s because, this is the common term used in this mega comic event to indicate collisions of different realities in the Multiverse. And that invariably can lead to the annihilation of one of them.
The importance of Secret Wars
In the 2015 version, the saga is responsible for the junction of different universes bringing to Earth-616 heroes such as Spider-Man by Miles Morales. At the same time it provoked a kind of “multiversal civil war”; and was also instrumental in the disappearance of the Fantastic Four of the Marvel Universe.
As for the second post-credits scene of Dr. Stranger in the Multiverse of Madnessthere is a joke with Bruce Campbell (the “pizza balls” salesman) that makes direct reference to the classic trash Death of the devil (also directed by Sam Raimi).
Dr. Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness
Directed by Sam Saimi, the sequel to the hero’s 2016 solo film is now in theaters.
In addition to the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strangethe cast includes Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Xochitl Gomez (America Chavez) among others.
Finally, check out the synopsis:
The highly anticipated film is about Doctor Strange’s journey into the unknown.
