Ah, Mother’s Day! Sunday lunch day being prepared and the love of the whole family gathered to celebrate the strength and affection that mothers represent in their children’s lives. And one of the intimate and delicious ways to celebrate the date is by watching good movies and series next to them.

1 – My Mother Is a Play

The famous and fun trilogy of films by actor Paulo Gustavo won the hearts of all families around the country. The narrative focuses on Dona Hermínia (played by the comedian), a housewife who is also the mother of Juliano and Marcelina.

The film, effortlessly, captivates viewers from the first minute. During almost 1h30 of narrative, we follow the messy daily life of the characters, and the family fights (which have a lot of love involved) between the mother, her children, and her ex-husband, Carlos Alberto.

The laugh is right, and the emotion even more so, after all, Dona Hermínia has in fact become a representation of the Brazilian mother. The first feature film is available on Netflix, while the second can be found on Telecine or Globoplay. The third is only available on Telecine.

As much as you’ve watched the comedy, it’s always worth sitting on the couch and seeing the brilliance of Brazilian actors on stage, isn’t it?

2 – How I Was Before You

If your mom loves a good romance, she’s sure to like “Me Before You”.

Starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, the film tells the story of a wealthy and successful young man who, overnight, finds himself in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, without the movements of his torso, legs and arms.

On the other side, we have Louisa Clark, who is a modest English worker, living a relationship that doesn’t make her any happier. When she is fired from her job, she starts looking for new opportunities in the region where she lives so as not to be far from her family.

That’s how she decides to accept the challenge of being Will’s caretaker. This is precisely the guiding thread that involves the entire plot. With brilliant and unconventional scenes, the feature softens even those who are not in love. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video.

3 – Big People

A classic of American cinema, the comedy “Gente Grande” premiered in 2010 and still earns the most sincere laughs from the audience. With jokes that come from great American comedians such as Adam Sendler and Chris Rock, the film is the right choice to relax.

The story tells about the lives of five friends – Lenny Feder, Eric Lamonsoff, Marcus Higgins, Rob Hilliard and Kurt McKenzie – who, after years of not seeing each other, gather with their families for the funeral of the basketball coach in who played during high school.

In between conversations, they decide to spend a few days in the countryside, to scatter their late teacher’s ashes, and reminisce about old times. In the end, the narrative is totally focused on the importance of family unit and how when you have friends, anything can be overcome. The feature film is available on Netflix.

4 – Red Alert

With a strong cast (Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot), the Netflix original provides great action scenes and a narrative full of interconnected ends for movie-loving viewers with lots of twists.

In “Red Alert”, we are introduced to the FBI’s top investigator, John Hartley, who steps in to capture one of the world’s most wanted criminals, the self-mastering art thief “The Bishop”.

In order to complete his mission, he will need to team up with another criminal from the art world, Nolan Booth, in a plan to capture The Bishop. The adventure has unimaginable endings, and takes the trio on a cat-and-mouse hunt around the world.

The feature was so successful that, in 28 days, it accumulated 328.8 million hours of viewing on the platform.

5 – Charm

Closing the list with a very cute animation from Disney studios, the film celebrates the power of the Madrigal family, who live hidden in a magical, lively, colorful and full of life house in the middle of the mountains of Colombia, in a small village called Encanto.

All members of the Madrigal family are born with gifts, be they healing or super strength. But what could happen when Mirabel doesn’t awaken her power? Could this be involved with a prophecy given years before? Is the family’s magic in ruins?

The questions are answered in the nearly two hours of the feature film, which also contains iconic songs such as “Não Falamos do Bruno”, and many moral lessons that will last a lifetime. The bet on this film, available on Disney+ is sure to delight moms.
