Mike Hagertyan actor well known for friends and who recently starred in the critically acclaimed HBO drama Someone somewhere, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 67 years old.
Bridget Everettwho played Hagerty’s on-screen daughter in “Somebody Somewhere,” shared the news on her Instagram on Friday.
A veteran actor with over 100 credits in various television shows and movies, Mike Hagerty was known for his recurring role on the hit NBC sitcom “Friends,” where he played Mr. Treeger was also a main cast member on Fox’s “The George Carlin Show” and HBO’s “Lucky Louie.” Born and raised in Chicago, Hagerty was known for his distinctive mustache and strong Chicago accent and started out as a performer in the famous Second City improv theater company.
Hagerty began his screen career in the early 1980s with small roles in films such as “Doctor Detroit”, “The Imposter”, “Turk 182” and “Brewster’s Millions”. In 1986, he booked his first television role in an episode of the classic comedy “Cheers”. In the following decades, he would become a frequent sight in sitcoms, making appearances on such well-known series as “Married… with Children”, “Murphy Brown”, “Dear John”, “Get a Life”, “The Wonder Years”, “Martin ”, “Seinfeld”, “The Wayans Bros.”, “The Drew Carey Show”, “Grace Under Fire”, “Ally McBeal”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, “Desperate Housewives”, “Boston Legal”, “Good Lucky Charlie”, “Glee”, “Happy Endings”, “The Mindy Project” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. Dramas he has participated in include “Crime Story”, “Angel”, “Doctor Shift” and “Deadwood”.
“Somewhere Somewhere,” which premiered in January of this year, was one of Hagerty’s latest projects. He played Ed Miller, a Kansas farmer and the soft-spoken father of main character Sam (played by Everett). Hagerty was a warm presence on the show, with the bond between his character and Sam becoming one of the show’s main emotional cores. A major storyline of the first season was Ed’s attempts to keep the family together after the death of Sam’s sister, as he struggled with his own grief. In addition to Everett, Hagerty’s main co-star Jane Drake Brody, who played his on-screen wife Mary Jo, who struggles with alcoholism, was another major plot point for the show’s first season. Production on the second season of “Somebody Somewhere” was set to begin in a few weeks.
Hagerty is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, sister Mary Ann Hagerty, sister-in-law Kathleen O’Rourke and niece Meg.
