10 – Parallel Mothers (2021)

Directed by Pedro Almodóvar, “Mães Paralelas” (2021) tells the stories of two single mothers who meet in the maternity ward, shortly before giving birth. This meeting of a mature woman and a teenager exposes female dilemmas. Penélope Cruz was nominated for best actress at the 2022 Oscars for the role. Available at Netflix.

9 – Pieces of a Woman (2020)

After a traumatic birth, Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and her husband deal with a court case against the midwife, whom the protagonist’s mother blames for the baby’s death. Torn apart by the loss, she lives isolated from her husband and family. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó and produced by Martin Scorsese, “Pieces of a Woman” (2020) was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress (Kirby) and can be seen on Netflix.

The routine begins to change when their children, conceived by artificial insemination, find their biological father and bring him to the family. Released in 2017, the film is an adaptation of the play which in turn is an adaptation of the eponymous book by Thalita Rebouças.
