Bolsonaro attacks Petrobras again in speech in RS and blames the company for high fuel prices | Rio Grande do Sul

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) again attacked Petrobras in a speech at the National Soy Fair, in Santa Rosa, in the North Region of RS. After speaking to the public about the company’s responsibility for the rise in diesel and other fuel prices, he posed for photos next to a harvester and greeted supporters.

“This week you are getting to know a little more about Petrobras here in Brazil. We have niches, we still have strongholds in our government spread throughout Brazil that have not understood that we are all in the same boat. plus the fuel readjustment in a company that earns tens of billions of reais a year at the expense of our Brazilian people”, he said.

The Union holds the majority of Petrobras’ common shares, with 50.3% of the total. The state-owned company adopts a pricing policy for its refineries that is guided by fluctuations in the price of a barrel of oil on the international market and by the exchange rate.

In recent months, the international price of oil has risen, especially due to tensions caused by the war between Ukraine and Russia, the latter one of the world’s largest oil producers.

It was precisely the conflict that motivated Bolsonaro to repeat the accusations against Petrobras. On the way from the stage to the booth sector, in response to the RBS TVwho accompanied the presidential entourage, the president repeated to journalists criticisms that he had already quoted in a live broadcast on social networks in the middle of the week.

“You must know what I said on the live, right? I had a feeling that there would be a new price adjustment. This is unjustifiable by Petrobras’ numbers. Petrobras is not in a position to be independent from Brazil”, he criticized.

‘It doesn’t justify’, says Bolsonaro about state-owned company’s profit

Bolsonaro said that other oil companies in the world have lowered their profit margin to face the crisis with the war in Ukraine, and says he hopes the Brazilian state-owned company will follow suit.

“Petrobras is different. Petrobras has a 100% higher profit than the next big oil company in the world. It doesn’t justify that. There is no interference, they have their own legislation”, he pointed out.

On Thursday (5), the company reported that it recorded net income of R$ 44.561 billion in the first quarter. The result was 3,718.4% higher than in the same period last year.

On the same day, Bolsonaro said that the profits recorded recently by the company are “a rape”, benefit foreigners and who pays the bill is the Brazilian population. The reference, repeated this Saturday, alludes to state-owned investors.

“I want to reveal to you, in the next few days, who are Petrobras’ shareholders: pension funds. Nothing against it. We are funding pensions for people from outside Brazil, and rich pensions”, he told the press.
