Ten Ideas to Celebrate Mother’s Love | Mother’s Day

By the sea, there’s go and dance
A “first experience for those who don’t know how to dance” or a “guaranteed fun for those who already know how to dance”, assures the organization. And an excellent Sunday afternoon with the family, we add, in the aftermath of World Dance Day (marked on April 29), with the sea air as a companion and tailored to mothers who like to give a little foot. Ballroom dancing, kizomba and salsa are some of the styles that are part of the invitation that Associação Trópico de Dança makes for a series of open-air classes, given by teachers, which are joined by free dances and exhibitions. It is scheduled for the 1st of May, at Marina de Oeiras, from 2:15 pm until sunset. Just show up.
To each mother, her experience (and wine)
Whether you are a fan of adventures or conversations, like to roll up your sleeves or simply want to relax, any mother is entitled to be treated to an experience to her liking, paired with a glass of wine suited to her profile. It was with this belief in mind that Caminhos Cruzados, producer of Dão wines, created a list of four suggestions for the 1st of May. In Nelas, Quinta da Teixuga awaits the “most adventurous mother” with a mystery to discover in the vineyards, in a peddy papper watered by a Clandestino Red. In the same setting, a wine lunch in the cellar brings lengthy conversations to the table, shared memories and stories told at the pace of a Reserva Encruzado. The “most executive mother” is challenged to be a winemaker for a day, creating her own wine (which she can bottle) and tasting an Alfrocheiro Red. Relaxation in contact with nature is at the distance of a picnic in the middle of the vineyards, with a Dão Novo holder. The price of the experiences – to be booked by emailing enoturismo@caminhoscruzados.net – varies between €17.50 and €45 per person.
A palace to debut
Stairs and galleries, library and chapel, rooms and halls – all richly and exuberantly ornate. In the surroundings, a park like only Sintra can offer. The only thing missing was the visits. Biester Palace, a “19th century treasure”, opens to the public for the first time. Restored but “untouched in terms of architecture, decoration and secular works of art that inhabit it”, guarantees the press release, it is “a remarkable example of romantic architecture”. Situated close to Quinta da Regaleira and with a privileged view of the towering Castelo dos Mouro, it enjoys “a character that is absolutely in communion with the mysticism that runs through the Biester family and the village”, they add. From April 30th, it can be visited every day, from 10 am to 8 pm (between November and March, the closing time will change to 6:30 pm). The ticket costs €10, half price for seniors and children aged between six and 12; under five and over 80 do not pay.
Pampering nest and music
At the Santa Clara Market, in Lisbon, the celebration lasts for two days. Feira do Mocho mounts a special edition, on the 30th of April and 1st of May, full of treats and music. The former can come in the form of handmade jewelry, natural scrubs, homemade cakes, creative dresses, hot sauces, tiles, organic soaps or illustrations. The music enters the scene through the voice of Vasco Ribeiro, who gives a concert there on Sunday at 3 pm. Organized in three zones – one for products gourmet, another for author and artist brands, and another for processed or second-hand items –, the fair is proud to dedicate itself exclusively “to the promotion of creative products made by the creators themselves, which prove to be innovative and can bring a new offer to consumers”. Her pieces are also available at Ninho do Mocho, the fair’s online window, where you can perfectly hatch the ideal gift.
Treats for the mother and baby
At eight months old, three African lion cubs are ready to show their snouts to visitors to the Lisbon Zoo. Classified as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the species is the focus of attention on Mother’s Day weekend, with the zoo sharing moments such as the cubs’ “breakfast” with your mother or one Animal Talk with curiosities about these animals. Family tickets are available at Clube Fashion, with prices between €55 and €70.
Like mother, like Frida
In the world of iconic figures, as in that of mothers, the legacy survives the person. Celebrating the anniversary, but also the women who inspire us through the determination, color and love with which they live life, the exhibition is worth visiting. Frida Kahlo, Life of an Icon, on display at the Porto Alfândega Congress Centre. In an immersive format, with the stamp of the Ocubo studio, in partnership with the Frida Kahlo Corporation Foundation, the Ideal Barcelona gallery and the Layers of Reality studio, the life and work of the Mexican artist is made known, without reproductions of paintings, but with images from movies, photo collections, music, virtual reality, holographic animations, videomapping and artistic installations. The experience is open until June 30th and can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday, from 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm, for the price of €14 (€12 for children from four to 11 years old, students and seniors; free up to three years old).
Encounters at the Museum
In Porto, the Soares dos Reis National Museum offers a family visit. With the space closed to the public on Sunday, May 1, the activity is brought forward to Saturday, between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm, and passes through the temporary exhibition Be Day Be Night It Doesn’t Matter – which brings together paintings, drawings and photographs by André Gomes and Pedro Calapez in dialogue with the works of Artur Loureiro on display there –, also inviting the youngest (between six and 12 years old) to participate in painting exercises inspired by the collection . The Camélias Garden, the Rainha D. Amélia Velodrome, the exhibition depositorium 2 and the chasuble acquired by D. Frei José Maria da Fonseca and Évora (Piece of the Month), are other points on the map. Entry is free.

For the 14th of May, a Tea course, which brings together “the botanical characteristics of the different types of tea, their cultivation and processing, the properties and benefits, as well as the preparation methods”, they explain in the presentation note, ending with a tasting (from 2 pm to 6 pm, 40€ ). ViniPortugal – Associação Interprofissional do Vinho celebrates in the Tasting Room in Lisbon and Porto, with a “relaxing and unforgettable” program for all mothers who “like a good glass of wine”. In addition to thematic tastings, there is also “a wine cellar service with dozens of wines from all Portuguese regions”, tailored to the palate of each one. Tell me how you met her
It was with his narration of how he met the mother of his children that Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) entertained millions of viewers during the nine seasons of stories-within-a-story of That’s How It Happened (How I Met Your Mother in the original title), the sitcom which was for the 2000s almost like friends was for 1990. This Sunday, on Fox Comedy, Ted and his friends Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) star in the Mother’s Day Special. At stake is “a marathon of the ten most epic episodes” of the series, announces the channel. The election fell to the fans, through social networks. It starts at 4:35 pm and ends at 8:30 pm, when the protagonism is transferred to another parent.
