A two-year-old boy found a firearm in the family’s home, located in Florida (USA). The child accidentally shot and killed her father, Reggie Mabry, 26. As a result, the mother, Marie Ayala, 28, was arrested on charges of manslaughter and negligence. The information is from the EFE news agency.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was also detained for the grievance of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as she and her husband were previously sentenced.
Local authorities reported that the couple had other children, aged 5 years and 5 months. None of them were hurt.
Florida state law requires that a firearm carried indoors must be kept locked in a box or secured with a padlock.
“The weapon was not stored properly. (It was in a location that was) easily accessible,” John Mina, the Orange County sheriff, told a news conference.
He pointed out that Marie and Reggie were on probation for child neglect and narcotics-related charges.
If convicted in the latter case, Marie faces up to 15 years in prison.
“Now these children have lost their parents. And a little boy has to live his life knowing he shot his father.”
