Mbappé scores and saves France from defeat by Austria

The French team was once again underwhelming this afternoon (10) and had to run from the loss to get a 1-1 draw against Austria, in Vienna, for the third round of the Nations League group stage. At the Ernst-Happel Stadium, the hosts set up the bar after taking the lead with Weimann, but Mbappé came off the bench to save the world champions with a goal in the final stretch.

The draw prevents France from approaching Denmark, which leads group 1 of the competition (seven points to two). The blue team suffers the third setback in a row and is just not the bottom of the bracket because Croatia is behind in the tie-breaking criteria. All these teams return to the field at 15:45 (Brasília time) on Monday (13): Austria visits Denmark, and France tries to recover at home against Croatia, in a new edition of the final of the last World Cup.

Coach Didier Deschamps has rotated the French national team to reduce wear and tear at the end of the European season: there were seven changes from the draw against Croatia four days ago. The team was competitive in both games and has talent, but neither is in the starting lineup, and Mbappé’s individuality is sorely missed. As the Croatians had done, Austria also tried to exploit this French mismatch — some passing errors and slower-than-usual creation.

Austria takes advantage of inattention and takes the lead

Even though, France started better than Austria, they owned the game from the start and had chances to get ahead. In the best of them, Benzema had a rebound inside the small area, but he headed weakly and missed. However, Deschamps’ reformed backline faltered in positioning and conceded the Austrian goal by leaving Weimann completely free behind Saliba’s back.

Mbappé leaves the bench and saves

A week after being substituted with knee pain, Mbappé returned to the field today. He had played 45 minutes against Denmark last Friday (3), and today he played about half an hour in the second half. He started hard and a little selfish against the boom set by the Austrians. It was just having space, however, that the French shirt 10 decided: he started at speed, was launched by Nkunku and hit the angle to equalize. He almost turned around minutes later, but stopped in a fantastic save by goalkeeper Pentz.
