what we already know about the paid version of the app

The messaging app Telegram, one of WhatsApp’s main competitors, will have a paid version called Telegram Premium. There have been rumors about this for a while, but a post by Pavel Durov, founder and chief executive of the platform, confirmed this Friday (10) that the paid version of the app will be released later this month. There is no official price information yet.

“We realized that the only way to enable features our fans ask for, while keeping existing features functional, is to create a paid option,” Durov said in a post on his Telegram channel. “So this month we’re launching Telegram Premium.”

Durov says that this plan will have additional features like more speed and that members of this paid version will get new features before everyone else.

Despite the announcement, the executive said that existing resources will remain free and that those who do not pay will also have access to new features.

“Even those who do not subscribe to Telegram Premium will have access to some of the benefits: for example, they will be able to receive documents and large media files sent by Premium users, or use Premium reactions pinned to a message to react in the same way.”

It’s worth remembering that WhatsApp, before being bought by Facebook (now known as Meta), also charged an annual fee of US$ 1. In 2016, the company established that people would not pay for using the platform.

What to have in Telegram Premium

Officially, Telegram will give more details later on what its paid version will look like. However, a leak obtained by the Russian channel Beta Info, on Telegram, shows the price of the monthly fee (US$ 4.99 – about R$ 25/month) and the promised features for Telegram Premium subscribers.
