iOS 16 will be able to identify counterfeit AirPods

We’re tired of talking around here about identical clones of AirPods that can even emulate some of the features of the original models. Almost always sold at much lower prices, these copies can be a real thorn in the side of less experienced consumers who sometimes end up purchasing a lower quality product.

This problem, however, may be close to becoming a thing of the past, since, according to the 9to5MacApple debuted with the Release Candidate of iOS 16 a alert for counterfeit AirPods on your system. The novelty, it is worth noting, is very reminiscent of the notifications already displayed by the iPhone/iPad in case of repairs with non-genuine parts.

The alert in question appears whenever the user tries to pair an AirPods clone with their device and offers the option to cancel the connection or continue with the process. There’s also another “Learn More” button that redirects you to Apple’s support page — where you can find tips on how to identify a counterfeit product from a genuine one.

Here is the message added by Apple:

These headphones could not be verified as genuine AirPods and may not behave as expected.

This alert obviously does not affect headphones made by third parties, but only models that try to impersonate AirPods. Most of these copies can not only activate the famous iOS quick pairing screen, but are also compatible with various aspects of the system, such as battery widgets.

This change comes to accompany the launch of the second generation of AirPods Pro, presented yesterday by Apple during the special event “Let’s go far”. With more incremental improvements, the new headphones promise up to 2x more efficient Active Noise Cancellation.
