Hiroshima, 30 September 2022. “Suzusan” is the name of the brand of Hiroyuki ‘Hiro’ Murase, a fashion designer who has successfully reinvented the Japanese concept “Shibori”, an ancient craft of textile finishing that literally means, “squeeze” or “to twist”.
Based in Dusseldorf, the company has reached a level of fame that is not limited to the borders of that German city, thanks to pieces that parade on Dior catwalks and attract top names, such as actress Natalie Portman.

Connected by our roots
Offering the best of Japanese design in Europe and around the world is something that Mazda is all about. While its roots lie in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, Suzusan’s mainstays lie some 500 kilometers further east, near Tokyo, in the village of Arimatsu in Aichi Prefecture. It was in this locality, where the founder of this fashion label was born, that the intangible heritage was rooted in the work of this artisan, transmitted over more than 400 years through different generations.
With the younger generation working in the traditional way in the handicraft studios of Arimatsu, we are witnessing an enrichment in terms of exclusive garments, made from high quality yarns, focusing on individual and modern designs. Following a well-known Mazda philosophy, Suzusan boldly employs and reinterprets traditional techniques in selected materials such as hand-woven cashmere, alpaca or sheer silk, materials sourced in Japan and around the world.
It was clear from the start that Mazda and Suzusan had a lot in common. In both brands, the principles of traditional craftsmanship are combined with modern design elements. Taking common objects and inserting them in a new context, using old techniques and finding something new and inspiring, valuing the empty space between design objects and patterns and seeking inspiration in the world around them and in nature, are some of the connecting elements. between Suzusan and Mazda.
While Suzusan manufactures each individual part by hand, Mazda’s craftsmen must reproduce these concepts perfectly, introducing them into each car, product of series production. With a legendary devotion to every detail, car manufacturing has thus become an art form for artisans.
