In all, there were 52 flights in the mentioned months. The controversy is that the Argentine was not always on board, as he made transport available for friends and family.

According to the newspaper, Messi’s plane was in flight for 368 hours and emitted an amount of carbon dioxide that an average Frenchman would emit in 150 years.

While sport is responsible for just 1% of France’s greenhouse gas emissions, many activists pointed to the role athletes play in influencing others, as well as their responsibility to lead by example.

Virtually all travel away from home in Ligue 1 is by private jet. PSG, in particular, used this transport for all their games away from Paris last season, while Montpellier was the team that made the least use of aircraft.

O L’Equipe also points out that Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba are other athletes who make constant use of private jets.
