In a security alert issued on Tuesday (27), the United States urged its citizens to leave Russia immediately, in the face of recent developments in the conflict in Ukraine and the partial mobilization initiated by President Vladimir Putin.
“U.S. citizens must not travel to Russia and those residing or traveling in Russia must leave Russia immediately while commercial travel options still exist. We remind US citizens that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not guaranteed in Russia.”says the statement.
There are currently no flights from Russia to the United States and Europe, so Americans will need to use connections in other countries, such as the Middle East, for example.
“Avoid all political or social protests and do not photograph security personnel at these events. Russian authorities arrested American citizens who participated in demonstrations.”follow the note.
On September 21, the Russian government began a mobilization of its citizens for the armed forces in support of the invasion of Ukraine. In this new scenario, the US government says that Russia can refuse to recognize US citizenship for dual nationals, deny them access to US consular assistance, prevent their departure from Russia and recruit dual nationals for military service.
The Department of State provides travel information on the Information for US Citizens in Russia – Travel Options Outside Russia page at travel.state.gov.
“Commercial flight options are extremely limited at the moment and often not available on short notice. Land routes by car and bus are still open. If you wish to leave Russia, you must make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The US Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist US citizens, and conditions, including transportation options, could suddenly become even more limited.“, says the note.
