“We cannot neglect”, says Piquerez about the title of the Brasileirão

Palmeiras left Mineirão with a slim 1-0 victory over Atlético-MG, but of paramount importance for the conquest of the Brazilian. One of the highlights of this triumph was left-back Joaquín Pìquerez.

Although the result was celebrated by the athletes, he highlighted that Palmeiras need to stay focused. “We know that we have a big difference to the second place, but the Brasileirão is competitive and we cannot be careless with that”, warned the Uruguayan.

Today, the team has an advantage of nine points over Fluminense.

Under the command of Abel Ferreira, the alviverde team won the Libertadores twice (2020 and 2021) and secured other titles, such as the Copa do Brasil (2020), Recopa Sul-Americana (2022) and Paulistão (2022). For the coach, one is missing in particular, that of the Brazilian Championship.

“That’s all it takes for him to consecrate himself”, said the full-back. “It’s been six years since we won a Brasileirão. It’s a very important title,” he added.

With the final of the national championship approaching, the Qatar World Cup looms on the horizon. The World Cup starts on November 20th. For Piquerez, in addition to the expectation of winning the title with Palmeiras, there is a chance to play for the Uruguayan national team.

“It’s my dream, I’m working towards it. My focus now is Palmeiras, I need to play a good game here. I’m working on a day-to-day basis.”

Palmeiras triumph

Throughout the interview, the Uruguayan praised the conquest of three more points against a “difficult opponent”, who has “a very good team and does not deserve to be where it is now in the table”.

For him, the victory came mainly because of the study that the coaching staff makes of the other teams, something that is a hallmark of Abel Ferreira’s management.

The duel was still important to give confidence and show the team’s competitiveness. As an example of this, Piquerez mentioned Marcelo Lomba and Benjamín Kuscevic, who have not played for Verdão recently.

Adaptation to Brazilian football

For the Uruguayan, national football is as competitive as the Premier League. “All the teams fight between the first and the last, they compete equally. There are many games and many competitions”, he explained.

As an example, the player mentioned the number of matches that Uruguayan teams have in a season. There are 30 in total. In Brazil, a team can play 80 games.

Another point addressed was the fact that he played more behind at Palmeiras, compared to the period he played at Peñarol. Despite this, adaptation was not a problem. “I like to get on the attack and help, but I do whatever it takes to help the team,” he declared.

Many Uruguayans here

“Without a doubt, Uruguay is a very small country, but the players have a lot of quality,” said Piquerez.

The player stated that he is happy to see his teammates playing in Brazilian football. “We have athletes in São Paulo, Santos, Atlhletico-PR among others”.

Career in Europe?

Asked if he would like to play in the old continent, the side was sincere. “If I said this isn’t a dream, I wouldn’t be serious.”

Future aside, the athlete made it clear that his focus is to continue performing well at Palmeiras and win the Brasileirão. The alviverde team returns to the field on Monday (3) against Botafogo, at 20:00 (Brasília time).
