CONMEBOL removes rumors and Libertadores final bankroll in Guayaquil

A meeting of the Conmebol Council that took place this Friday (30), in Córdoba, Argentina, ratified the decision to play the Libertadores final between Flamengo and Athletico-PR, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on October 29.

This allays fears that there would be a change of venue for the final because of the escalation of violence in the Ecuadorian city. Guayaquil is experiencing a wave of crimes that has led the Government of Ecuador to declare a state of exception until at least October 14th.

Behind the scenes there was pressure to change the venue of the decision. Conmebol has always ruled out any changes and now the entity guarantees that it will not interfere with the final venue.

The CONMEBOL Council is formed by the ten presidents of the South American football confederations, by the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, plus the three members from the South American continent that are part of the FIFA council. Juan Sebastián Palacios Muñoz, Ecuador’s Minister of Sport, also participated in the meeting.

At the meeting, all the events organized by CONMEBOL were evaluated, in addition to presenting the finances related to the tournaments in South America.

Social chaos has skyrocketed because of drug trafficking, with murders, gang wars, bombings, robberies, among other crimes that are increasing gradually year by year. According to the authorities, between January and August 2022, 861 people were murdered and the city concentrates 32.5% of the country’s homicides.
