Ukraine nuclear power plant director arrested by Russians, company says | World

Russian soldiers arrested Ihor Murashov, the director general of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe that is currently under Russian control.

Murashov is primarily responsible for the nuclear and radiological safety of the plant.

Energoatom, the Ukrainian state company that controls the plant, revealed that the director had been arrested. The UN nuclear energy agency asked for clarification.

Murashov was arrested on his way to the plant in the town of Enerhodar on Friday.

Energoatom boss Petro Kotin said the plant director was taken from his car, blindfolded and taken to an unknown location.

The detention “jeopardizes the safety of Ukraine’s operation and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” Kotin said.

Kotin also asked the UN nuclear energy agency, the IAEA, for help in trying to free the plant’s director.

Russia has yet to comment.

The power plant is a cause for concern during the war. The two countries, Russia and Ukraine, accuse each other of bombing the plant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the demilitarization of the area around the factory.
