A 20-year-old woman faces murder charges for allegedly running over a man on purpose to save a cat’s life in California. The incident took place on the 25th of September.
According to the New York Post, Hannah Star Esser believed that Luis Anthony Victor, 40, was trying to kill the animal. The man was run over by the young woman and died instantly. It was not known what happened to the cat.
According to California police, Hannah and Luis argued on the street because she accused the man of trying to run over the cat. They both got out of the vehicles and she even shouted profanity at him, who was trying to calm her down, according to authorities.
But Hannah got back in the car, rounded a corner, and drove toward the man, hitting him. Victor landed on the hood of the car and on the windshield.
Prosecutors for the Orange County District Office claim Hannah intentionally accelerated, running him over so hard that he was thrown into the air.
“The circumstances leading up to the confrontation are still under investigation,” Kimberly Edds, a Cabinet spokeswoman, told The Washington Post.
If convicted, Hannah Esser will face a maximum sentence, which can range from 25 years to life in prison.
“This action showed a complete disregard for human life,” said Orange County Attorney Todd Spitzer.
The young woman’s trial is scheduled to begin on October 13. Meanwhile, she remains in the County Jail.
