Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench for the entire Premier League clash between Manchester City and Manchester United this Sunday. Red Devils coach Erik ten Hag explained that he did not field the Portuguese striker “out of respect for his great career”. The Citizens applied a 6-3 rout in the Manchester Derby with the most goals in history.

– I didn’t put him on the field out of respect for Cristiano, for his great career. And the other thing was that you could put Martial on, because he needs minutes.
At the end of the first half, Manchester City was already leading by 4 to 0. The score came to be 6 to 1 for the hosts before Martial scored twice.
As has been the choice of manager Erik ten Hag in the Premier League, Cristiano Ronaldo was once again listed on the bench. The difference is that this time the Portuguese did not even enter the field. The Dutch coach made all five substitutions during the match and passed the forward. In came Lindelöf (replacing the injured Varane), Shaw, Martial (scorer of two goals), Casemiro and Fred.

Ten Hag also explained why he didn’t start the match with Casemiro making up the midfield. McTominay ended up taking the position in place of the Brazilian:
– The day we signed him, we started winning. The team was doing well. It’s nothing against Casemiro, it’s for McTominay. I’m sure he (Casemiro) will be important to us. In the short term, he will find himself within the team, but it has to come naturally.
Manchester United, with 12 points in seven matches, are in 6th place in the Premier League. In the next round, the team visits Everton. Before, take Omonia, also away from home, next Thursday.
