Hamilton laments ‘bad day’ after ninth place in Singapore | formula 1

– I don’t feel great emotions right now. It’s a very boring, very poor day. A bad day, to be honest. But I feel fine, I’m just thinking about tomorrow,” she said.

At the start, Carlos Sainz overtook Hamilton at the first turn and took the Brit’s third position. The Mercedes driver complained of being thrown out, but the race direction did not open an investigation.

On lap 33, Hamilton made his first slip on the wet track and ended up facing the wall at turn 7. The seven-time champion had to go to the pits to replace the damaged front wing, taking advantage of the pit stop to put on medium tires.

– I think we started the weekend (in shape) quite decently, but very, very unlucky at the end. I was trying, obviously it’s hard to overtake. In that lock at Turn 7, when these things happen, your heart sinks a little bit.”

Asked if he would be able to take the podium in a race without stumbling, Hamilton highlighted the importance of tire strategy at Marina Bay. All riders came out of intermediate compounds: the cat’s jump would be to get the moment to switch to slick compounds.

– Potentially we would have undercut him (Sainz). But it wasn’t an undercut battle, it was who went to the slicks first. From there, it would be a “slice and dice” (slang for the act of sharing information and analyzing it better).

“I was hoping and working for it, but it all went downhill from there when I crashed. My apologies to the team. We live and learn and I will recover.”

The race ended under the clock – and not by the number of laps – due to the proximity to the two-hour limit, the maximum stipulated in the regulations. When he was in eighth, on the last lap, Lewis slipped once more, this time in pursuit of Sebastian Vettel. The failure allowed Max Verstappen to overtake the Briton and take the position, pushing Hamilton to ninth.

– I tried to overtake Seb (Vettel), but I was wet on the inside. When you fail, you get up and try again—he finished.

With Hamilton in ninth and Russell in 14th, Mercedes bids farewell to Marina Bay with just two points added. It is the worst result of 2022 for the German team, which sees the difference for Ferrari rise to 66 points – the eight-time champion has 373 against 439 for the team.

Formula 1 heads to the Japanese GP next Sunday, October 9, at 2am (Brasilia time). Max Verstappen can take the double title at Suzuka, but needs to leave Asia at least 112 points higher than Charles Leclerc. With this Saturday’s results, the Dutchman’s lead dropped from 116 to 104 points.
