Jailbreak on PS5? Video shows Sony console being unlocked | PlayStation

It is possible to unlock the PlayStation 5 (PS5) via Jailbreak, according to a console modder named Lance McDonald, who captured the process on video. Known for a modification to play Bloodborne at 60 fps, Lance didn’t create the procedure, which takes advantage of a security flaw in the console, but video of him went viral on the subject. For now, unlocking is extremely limited and only allows downloading external files, making it impossible to run them on the model.

It is worth mentioning that the practice would, in theory, allow downloading any game for free (and, consequently, illegal), but the procedure was not done with the intention of reaching the general public. Additionally, Sony has a history of banning modded consoles on the PlayStation Network, preventing them from performing many of their functions if they detect such changes.

The unlocking process, known as “Jailbreak”, means that developers were able to bypass Sony’s protections that limit the use of the video game to its intended functions. Through this unlocking, Lance has access to the console’s development Debug menu, through which he can install the PT demo, from Silent Hill, from PlayStation 4 (PS4), but not play it. It is worth remembering that PT is a game that has not been officially available on the PlayStation Store since its cancellation, which led producer Konami to remove it from the store.

The unlock itself is still quite limited and, despite granting write and read access to the console, it does not allow the execution of external apps, making it impossible to run a game, for example. The security flaw can also only be used on system versions from 4.03 Oct 2021, only working 30% of the time.

The exploit creator warns that this unlock is not something for the public, only interested in developers curious about how the video game works. A security flaw, however, could be a gateway for malicious developers looking to offer pirated games in the future.

It is important to note that modifying the console system may void the warranty, as well as lead to a ban on the unit. In generations past, Sony detected and kicked altered consoles from the PlayStation Network network, making it impossible for them to play online games or make purchases from the PlayStation Store.
