Japan says North Korea launched missile over its territory | World

The Japanese government said North Korea launched a missile over its territory on Tuesday morning (4), local time. The information was corroborated by the South Korean authorities.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno condemned the shooting, saying “the North’s repeated actions are a serious challenge to international peace”.

The Japanese cabinet announced on Twitter that “the missile is believed to have landed in the Pacific Ocean at around 7:29 am”. It would have fallen into the sea about 3,000 km off the Japanese coast and could have been an intercontinental missile.

The North Korean test prompted an unusual warning from the Japanese government for some residents to seek refuge.

“North Korea appears to have launched a missile. Please evacuate to underground buildings or shelters,” the government said in an alert issued at 7:29 am Tuesday (7:29 pm GMT).

Japanese national broadcaster NHK reported that the alert was in effect for two northern regions of the country.

South Korean and US officials have also warned for months that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to carry out another nuclear test. Both sources said they believe this could happen shortly after the next Communist Party congress in China on October 16.

North Korea, the target of several UN sanctions for its weapons programs, typically seeks to maximize the geopolitical impact of its tests at an opportune moment.

On Saturday morning, North Korea fired an unspecified ballistic missile towards its east coast on Saturday. It was the fourth shot Pyongyang had fired in a week.

The launches came after the United States and South Korea carried out the Ulchi Freedom Shield, the biggest joint military exercise in about five years, and after US Vice President Kamala Harris visited Seoul last week.

Japan’s coast guard also reported at least two previous ballistic missile tests that it suspects were conducted by Pyongyang. North Korea fired missiles before and after Harris’ visit to South Korea.
