A weather system forming in the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico could hit Florida’s east coast as a hurricane later this week, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday. ). According to the center, the low-pressure area could become a tropical or subtropical storm as early as Monday (11/7).

The system is forecast to approach parts of the Bahamas and Florida coast with hurricane strength between Wednesday and Thursday, about six weeks after Hurricane Ian made landfall and devastated parts of southwest Florida.

State Governor Ron DeSantis on Sunday warned residents to be prepared. “Apparently, hurricane season isn’t over yet,” said NHC acting deputy director Mike Brennan.

According to him, the scale of the system is very large, meaning it will likely affect a wide area, no matter where the center of the storm goes.

Hurricane-hunting aircraft are expected to fly through the system under development on Monday to better explore its formation.

So far, forecasts indicate the storm will be significantly weaker than Ian, which hit Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane and left about 130 dead.

“Regardless of development, there is an increasing risk of coastal flooding, tropical storm-force winds, heavy rain and waves, and beach erosion along much of the southeastern coast of the United States, the east coast of Florida, and parts of the central regions. and northwest Bahamas,” said the center.

Although the peak of the hurricane season usually occurs in mid-September, the season runs until November.
