Celebrating the visit of Viola Davis to Brazil for the release of the film The Woman King I chose my five favorite films by the American actress and producer, who was born in 1965, to honor her. Viola began her career acting in plays and supporting roles in film and has already earned a oscara emmya Golden Globea BAFTA it’s two tony awards (the most important award in theater) and was considered by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people on the planet in 2012 and 2017.

Considered one of the greatest and most versatile actresses today, her first prominent roles were in the films Kate & Leopold (2001) and Far From Paradise (2002) and in the television series Law & Order. A standout role in her career was attorney Annalize Keating on the television series How to Get Away with Murder for which she made history and became the first black actress to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. In 2017, she became the first black actress to win the Triple Crown of Acting, a term used to describe actors who have been awarded the three most prestigious awards related to acting, Oscar, Emmy and Tony for their performance.

Check out my five favorite films by the actress:

Cross Stories: In 1960s Mississippi, Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a high society girl who is determined to become a writer. She begins interviewing the town’s black women who have left their lives to work raising children for the white elite, of which Skeeter herself is a part. Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), Skeeter’s best friend’s maid, is the first to grant an interview. Despite the criticism, Skeeter and Aibileen continue to work together and, little by little, get new members. Year 2012.

The Supreme Voice of the Blues: The film follows Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) in Chicago, 1927, as an album recording session is steeped in tension between her ambitious horn player Levee (Chadwick Boseman) and white management who are determined to control the unstoppable “Mother of the Blues” . However, a conversation on the spot reveals truths that will shake everyone’s lives. Year 2020.

Suicide squad: After the appearance of Superman, agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is convinced that the US government needs to have its own team of metahumans to combat possible threats. To do so, she creates the Suicide Squad project, where dangerous incarcerated villains are forced to carry out missions at the behest of the government. If successful, they have their sentences shortened by 10 years. Otherwise, they simply die. The group is authorized by the government after the sudden attack of Magia (Cara Delevingne), one of the “summoned” by Amanda, who turns against her. In this way, Deadshot (Will Smith), Arlequina (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Crocodile (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and Amarra (Adam Beach) are summoned for the mission. At the same time, the Joker (Jared Leto) takes the opportunity to try to rescue the love of his life: Harley Quinn. Year 2016.

The Widows: A failed robbery causes Harry Rawlins (Liam Neeson) and his gang to be killed by the police and the money they stole is destroyed by the flames. This causes Harry’s widow, Veronica (Viola Davis), to be charged for the stolen sum to be returned. Pressed, she finds one of Harry’s notebooks that predicts in detail what would be his next blow. Veronica then decides to carry out the robbery, with the help of the other widows of those killed in the frustrated robbery. Year 2018.

A Boundary Between Us: In the 1950s, Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) is 53 years old and lives with his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), and youngest son, Cory (Jovan Adepo). He works collecting garbage from the streets and fights at the company so that he can migrate to the post of garbage truck driver. Troy feels a deep resentment for not being able to become a professional baseball player, due to the color of his skin, and because of this, he doesn’t want his son to continue as a sportsman. This causes the young man to clash with his father, as a recruiter is about to be sent to observe him at football games. Year 2017.
