Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reveals a new side to Contessa Valentina de Fontaine. See how this could explain why Val hit Hawkeye.
Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) was revealed to be the director of the CIA in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand that adds a curious new facet to why Val chose Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) for murder in Archer hawk🇧🇷 Fontaine’s principal is also the ex-wife of Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), and she has him arrested for helping Wakandans. Obviously, Val is no good and is developing his own Avengers-like team, the Thunderbolts, but how does Hawkeye fit into all of this?
It is very likely that Valentina sees Hawkeye as a threat to her overall plans. So much so that de Fontaine coerced Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) into killing Clint Barton, toying with her pain and blaming Barton for the death of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). However, Val was already the director of the CIA when she hired Yelena, and it’s interesting that she sent a former Russian assassin Black Widow after Barton rather than using CIA and US government assets. This indicates that de Fontaine wanted plausible deniability and removed direct blame on her and the agency if Yelena killed Hawkeye. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is defined after Archer hawkso Val already knows that Yelena didn’t kill Barton, but Hawkeye’s survival doesn’t seem to get in the way of her plans.
The Countess must have had a reason to attack Hawkeye.
Hawkeye must be dangerous to Valentina de Fontaine for two reasons: He’s an Avenger and a former member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Half of the original six Avengers are dead or gone, but the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are still active. with Hawkeye. However, Hulk and Thor operate on a different playing field, and they’re not a trained government agent who spent years murdering members of organized crime during the five years after Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) attack, like Hawkeye.
Whether Valentina is secretly or illicitly assembling the Thunderbolts, Clint Barton is the only remaining ex-Avenger who could take notice and intervene. And Hawkeye is far more dangerous than he appears, which Val respectfully acknowledges by taking steps to eliminate him. Targeting Clint Barton to death is also an admission that Fontaine’s warden doesn’t believe Hawkeye would ever work with her, let alone join the Thunderbolts.
Could Hawkeye be connected to the Thunderbolts?
Considering Marvel Comics source material gets interesting because Hawkeye was part of an iteration of the Thunderbolts and even led the team. But Clint Barton (and Jeremy Renner) are not part of the rays list, though given the history of Marvel Studios’ shared universe, it’s possible that Hawkeye will appear in the film, but it’s highly classified at this stage. Meanwhile, the Thunderbolts team’s power level is much more grounded than that of the Avengers and would suit Hawkeye better if he teamed up with or fought with them alongside his protégé, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).
Fontaine’s director’s focus on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it was the United States guaranteeing its own supply of Vibranium, and that could also influence Val’s Thunderbolts plan. For example, Val might want the Thunderbolts to have Vibranium weapons, like Vibranium shields for US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Red Guardian (David Harbour). It’s also possible that after Yelena failed to kill Clint Barton in Archer hawk, Valentina simply decided to go ahead with her plans and forget about Barton. However, it is interesting that the director of the CIA ordered a hit on Clint Barton and, from Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverHawkeye might not know what she did or why.
