Expert explains that treatment time depends on the severity of the torsion; this is not the first time that Neymar has injured this ankle
Neymar, the star of the Brazilian national team, suffered a sprain in his right ankle during the second half of the match between Brazil and Serbia, this Thursday (24th), after a fight with the Serbian lateral Milenkovic. With the injury, there is a possibility that the striker will be absent in the game on Monday, the 28th, when Brazil faces Switzerland, in a game valid for Group G of the World Cup in Qatar.
After suffering the sprain, also called torsion, the number 10 had to be replaced. The team’s doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, stated that there is a need to “wait 24h, 48h” to make a new assessment of the attacker’s situation. To Earthsports physiotherapist Flora Pitta stated that, in cases like this, recovery of the ankle can occur in a variable amount of time, depending on the severity.
According to Flora, a sprain occurs when there is “a displacement in greater amplitude than the physiological movement of the ankle” and causes pain, edema and, sometimes, muscle spasms. 🇧🇷A spraining motion typically happens in inversion or eversion. In Neymar’s case, an eversion occurred, as we see that his foot turned outwards, “he explains.
The expert points out that this type of injury is classified into three levels of severity: grade 1, when there is ligament stretching; grade 2, when there is partial ligament injury; and grade 3, when there is a total ligament injury.
“This type of injury is very common in sports”, says the physiotherapist. According to Flora, it is not possible to determine how long Neymar will take to recover. She says she believes he won’t be in Monday’s game. “I believe he will be rested for other games and will be treated because Neymar has already had other injuries to this same ankle, it’s not the first time. problem with that ankle for a while”.
In 2019, the star was out of the Copa America, held in Brazil, after suffering a sprain, and doctors detected a ligament tear in his right ankle, the same one that twisted this Thursday. That year, the player suffered the injury at the start of the friendly match in which Brazil defeated Qatar 2-0, at Mané Garrincha.
Treatment and severity
According to Flora, a milder sprain may take a few minutes to recover, but in more severe cases it may take 8 to 12 weeks for the person to fully recover, and in some sprains it may take performing a surgical procedure.
Flora agrees with the position of the doctor accompanying Neymar, of not yet determining the date of the star player’s return to the field, because, in this case, it is necessary to carry out imaging tests and observe whether there will be any hematoma, which indicates if there was rupture of a blood vessel.
The treatment, as explained by the physiotherapist, consists of physiotherapy, rest, application of ice packs and use of anti-inflammatories.
“Neymar’s physiotherapy already started when he was on the pitch. If he were my patient, in this case, the first thing I would do would be to put a little boot on him and not let him step on the ground. Today we have many resources in physiotherapy, such as the laser and the therapeutic ultrasound for tissue repair. In his case, I believe that he may need to rest for a couple of weeks”, he says.
