After the Netherlands’ draw with Ecuador (1-1), the Dutch legend criticized the centre-back’s approach to Enner Valencia’s goal and accused him of being a bad team captain.
The Netherlands, current joint leaders of Group A of the 2022 Mundial, drew 1-1 on Friday with Ecuador, who have the same four points, in the second round of the tournament.
After the match, Marco van Basten criticized the approach of Virgil van Dijk, Dutch centre-back, in Enner Valencia’s goal. “He’s just waiting and looking at him… Where are you looking? He needs to be on top of him! He just let him kick!”, he told the NOS newspaper, also accusing him of being a bad captain.
Now, the Liverpool centre-back also made statements to the media after the final whistle and, when asked about the former striker’s criticism, van Dijk downplayed it.
“He never says positive things. What do you want me to do? It’s easy to talk from the studio. Am I failing as a captain? What do you want me to do with that information? I’m always direct and lead the team in the best way possible”, he assured.
The Netherlands ends their participation in the group stage of the 2022 Mundial against Qatar (Tuesday, at 3:00 pm), already mathematically removed from the round of 16. At the same time, Ecuador will face Senegal, who are forced to win to ensure passage to the next stage.
