Palmeiras and two other teams have already represented the Brazilian national team; remember

As soon as Richarlisson decided for Brazil against Serbia, scoring both goals, Fluminense fans made a point of highlighting his connection with the club on social networks. The same would probably have happened to the Flamengo supporters if the hero of the game had been Vini Jr or Paquetá. In times of selection dominated by athletes who play in Europe, club pride started to be fed by the roots. But there was a time when it wasn’t like that. And more: Brazil has already played with 11 players from a single team – every fan’s dream.

It wasn’t just once that this happened. At least three times, an entire team wore the shirt of the national team and represented the country. But it is important to note that this has never happened in a World Cup. Not even in a championship game. Only in friendlies. EXTRA recalls these stories below.

Palm trees (1965)

As part of the Mineirão inauguration celebrations, a game between Brazil and Uruguay was scheduled. São Paulo Champion in 1963 and runner-up in the following two years, Palmeiras was considered one of the best teams at the time. And he was invited to represent the national team, which he did with great competence: a 3-0 victory over the two-time world champions, goals by Rinaldo, Tupãzinho and Germano.

It is common to say that the Palmeiras were the only ones to represent the selection. It’s not like that. Other teams did. The exclusivity of the São Paulo club is that it was the only one to assign both the squad and the coaching staff.

Corinthians (1965)

The Brazilian Sports Confederation, predecessor of the CBF, repeated the dose and, that same year, again invited a club to play for the national team. The chosen one was Corinthians, who promptly accepted the offer to represent the country in a friendly against Arsenal, in London.

But the experience was not the best. Two days before the friendly match, Corinthians had a game against Santos de Pelé for the Paulista Championship. They had to head to the airport as soon as the final whistle was blown. To complete, they left São Paulo under 30ºC and got off the plane in London with a cold of -3ºC. The result of the fatigue + cold combo was a 2-0 defeat.

A curiosity is that, after the game, the two teams received a visit from Prince Philip in the locker room. The conversation with Queen Elizabeth’s husband lasted for hours.

In 2013, Corinthians even launched a commemorative shirt to remember the date. It had the blue color, the same one used in 1965.

Atlético-MG (1968)

The last time a football team represented the Brazilian national team was in 1968. The honor went to Atlético-MG, which faced – and won – Yugoslavia by 3-2 in the Mineirão. The goals were scored by Vaguinho, Amauri and Ronaldo Drummond.

The game in Belo Horizonte took place two days after a 3-3 draw between the European runners-up and the “official” Brazil of Pelé, Rivellino and Tostão, at Maracanã. This result led to the dismissal of the National Selection Commission, a committee of technicians that defined the squads and lineups (Aimoré Moreira was the one who directed the team from the edge of the pitch).

International (1984)*

There are those who remember the Internacional players wearing the Brazilian national team jersey at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. But Brazil did not compete in the Games with a 100% Colorado team. The Gauchos gave up their 11 starters. But athletes from other clubs, such as Flamengo, Santos and Corinthians completed the squad, which returned to the country with the silver medal.
