Spanish technician honors daughter who died of osteosarcoma; understand disease – 11/27/2022

This Sunday (27), Spain and Germany will play the most anticipated game of the first phase of the Qatar Cup. The date, which for that reason alone is already special for the Spanish team, has an even greater meaning for coach Luis Enrique.

4 years ago, on that same day, he lost his daughter Xana, who died at the age of 9 from osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer). On his Instagram profile, the coach paid tribute to the little one.

“Today we not only play against Germany. It is also a very special day because Xanita would have turned 13. Love, wherever you are, lots of kisses, have a great day. We love you!”, says Luis Henrique in the video.

What is osteosarcoma

According to Inca (National Cancer Institute), osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer in children and adolescents up to 19 years old.

The disease usually affects boys and has a peak incidence in the second decade of life, between 10 and 19 years. Neoplasia usually occurs in long bones, such as the femur (thigh), tibia (shin) and humerus (arm), in the metaphyseal region — where the bone grows.

Age, location of the tumor, presence of metastasis (when the cancer has already spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs) directly influence the prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma.

– What are the causes of illness In most cases, there is no predisposing factor to the development of bone cancer. However, there is a greater risk in children who have certain genetic syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni, which is hereditary and alters a gene whose function is to suppress tumors.

🇧🇷 Symptoms The most common sign of osteosarcoma is pain, which may or may not be associated with soft tissue masses (muscles, tendons, fat and even blood vessels). Over time, the disease tends to progress to the point of limiting movement and making daily activities impossible.

How is the treatment

Chemotherapy and surgery are usually indicated.

The surgical procedure aims to resect the tumor, but to be performed depends on the location of the cancer, the presence of metastasis and neurovascular impairment.

In some cases, a more radical approach may be necessary, with the amputation of the limb affected by the disease.
