Philip David Charles Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in the city of London, England.

The Briton is the youngest of three children born of the marriage between an insurance manager and a theatrical agent. Her sister Carole, was an ice skater and followed in her mother’s footsteps by also acting in the field of acting. Brother Clive became a famous cartoonist.

The first contact the artist had with the drums, which in the future would be his most prominent instrument, was still in childhood. The artist says that at the age of 5 he got a toy battery as a Christmas present, and it was love at first sight.

At the age of 14, he decided to drop out of high school to dedicate himself entirely to art. Young Phil left academic life to become a full-time student at Bárbara Speake, the art institute where his mother worked.

His first real job in the industry came in 1964 and was as an extra in the Beatles movie, “A Hard Day’s Night”. Phil Collins wasn’t even credited with producing, but the doorway was open.

Still in 1964, Phil joined the cast of the musical “Oliver!”, based on the classic book “Oliver Twist”. At the time, he was gaining 15 pounds a week and remained in the play for two seasons.

Collins even acted in the film “Calamity the Cow”, in 1967, but a disagreement with a director was the last straw for him to decide to dedicate himself only to music.

After the declared end of his acting career, Phil worked for some rock bands of the time, like Flaming Youth and Yes, for example. And it was during this period that Collins and Ronnie Caryl, a school friend, embarked on the path of music together.

With the arrival of the year 1970, his musical trajectory was completely transformed from his entry into the iconic group Genesis.

The band had signed a contract with Charisma Records to record their second studio album, but was swayed by the departure of John Mayhew, the drummer, and Anthony Phillips, the guitarist.

Then, the remaining musicians decided to continue with the band and published an advertisement in the music magazine Melody Maker recruiting new members. Collins knew the owner of Charisma Records and soon got a place in the auditions, along with his friend Ronnie.

After the tests, Phil Collins was approved and officially became Genesis’ drummer. On the other hand, Ronnie didn’t make it and was replaced by Steve Hackett.

From 1970 to 1975, Collins was responsible for drums and mainly backing vocals on Genesis albums and concerts. His first contribution with the group took place in 1971, with the album “Nursery Cryme”.

In 1975, singer Peter Gabriel announced his departure, leaving Genesis without a vocalist. It was at this point that Collins stepped out of the backing vocal position and took over lead vocals for the group.

In 1976, Genesis released “A Trick of the Tail”, an album that officially featured Phil Collins as the band’s lead singer.

The project took third place in the UK charts and thirty-first in the United States. In addition, the specialized critics also liked the new sound. In the words of Rolling Stone magazine: “Genesis managed to turn the possible catastrophe of Gabriel’s departure into its first broad-based American hit”.

-In 1977, another change in the formation of the group. Genesis turned into a trio, with just Collins, Banks and Rutherford. They released the album “And Then There Were Three”, which departed from usual rock and approached a more typical radio pop sound.

In addition, it was with the single “Follow You Follow Me” from this project, that Genesis won its first place in the UK Top 10 and US Top 40.

After all this success of the album, Genesis went on a world tour, but after the end, in December 1978, it went on hiatus.

Phil Collins took this break from his career due to the divorce he was facing. At the time, the singer was married to Andrea Bertorellie already had two children: Simon and Joely Collins.

The resumption of his musical career came in 1981, when Collins released his first solo studio album, called “Face Value”. Collins’ introduction as a solo artist to the world brought the artist much success. In the United States alone, the project sold 5 million copies.

In November 1982, Collins’ second solo album was released. “Hello, I Must Be Going!” it sold a little less than the first, but even so, it continued to boost the artist.

At the same time, Genesis resumed activities and released albums and even records recorded live.

In 1984, Collins was responsible for writing and performing the song “Against All The Odds” for the soundtrack of the film of the same name. The track was widely embraced: it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, earned Collins his first Grammy Award in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category, and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

It was also that year that Phil Collins married for the second time. The singer sealed marriage with Jill Tavelman and together they had Lily Collins🇧🇷 Of all Phil’s children who pursued an artistic career, Lily was undoubtedly the most successful. The actress is known for several productions that she has starred in, such as the film “Mirror Mirror” and the series “Emily in Paris”.

In 1985, Collins put his name to one of the biggest events in history: Live Aid. He was the only performer to appear in both the London show and the US show on the same day.

In 1986, Collins returned to work with Genesis. The band released their thirteenth studio album called “Invisible Touch”. The project became the best-selling project in the band’s entire history and was even awarded a Grammy Award.

After that, the band went on more touring, and when it came to an end, Collins took on a role he had neglected since the 1960s: that of an actor. He starred in the film “Buster”, which has as its plot the Great Robbery of the Ledburn Train, in England, which took place in the year 1963.

Reviews for the film were somewhat controversial. Many said that the film glorified crime and was even boycotted by some public figures, such as Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

In 1989, Collins released his fourth solo album. “… But Seriously” addressed more social and political themes, which led to debate in the media. Despite this, the project reaped good results and became the UK’s biggest selling album of 1990.

Already in 1991, the year was dedicated to Genesis. The band released another studio album, this time called “We Can’t Dance”.

Then the eyes returned to his solo works. In 1993, Collins released “Both Sides”, a project that had a composition process very different from anything the artist had ever done. For this record, the artist played all the instruments on the recording and produced everything himself. That’s because, according to him, the songs were so personal that only he could play them.

In the year 1999, Collins was recruited by Disney to write the theme song for the movie Tarzan. The track “You Will Be In My Heart” became an international hit and entered the affectionate memory of audiences of different ages.

Additionally, in 2000, “You’ll Be In My Heart” earned Collins an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Still in 1999, Collins was awarded one of the highest honors an artist can receive. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the United States.

In 2003, Phil Collins and Disney made history together again. The artist was chosen to compose the soundtrack of the film “Brother Bear”.

In 2007, Collins returned to work with the band Genesis after so many years dedicated to other things. The artist embarked on the Turn It On Again Tour, which had shows in Europe and the United States.

In the 2010s, Phil Collins also came into contact with Adele. The artist has already said in some interviews that the two worked together in the studio and that her voice was impressive. However, no musical partnership was officially released.

In 2016, he released his autobiography called “Not Dead Yet”. The launch was accompanied by a concert tour in Europe.

In March 2022, the singer ended his partnership with Genesis and ended an era. Phil Collins said goodbye to the public and the band in March this year at a show in London.
