The World Cup coming on the heels of a close presidential election in Brazil has extended political polarization to fan uniforms. As supporters of the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) continue to use the shirt of the Brazilian National Team as a kind of symbol, even after the defeat at the polls, voters from Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) adopted alternatives to differentiate themselves from Bolsonarists. Models produced in several languages with messages that make political references have gone viral on the internet: “I’m just rooting for Brazil. Don’t confuse me with bolsominion!”.

With the same concern, anti-Bolsonaro fans also started to hang Brazilian flags in the windows with the caveat that the crowd is only for the Cup – and not in support of anti-democratic acts that spread across the country asking for military intervention for Lula not to take possession. Another model widely used in São Paulo shows the flag with a soccer ball in the center.
To leave no doubt, many still take pictures and expose the “strategy” on social networks to make a point. In this house, the resident made a point of warning: “It’s for the World Cup!”

The clash of political ideas was also reflected in the colors of the selection’s shirts. There are even those who have options made in red, in reference to the color of the PT, or add a star in the original CBF version and add the number 13 on the back, as the future first lady did. But for those who cannot or do not want to invest in the selection’s official shirts, a series of virtual stores offer different models that arrive by post in the preferred language. The report found sayings against the president in Spanish, French and English, as well as options that only show the number 13 on the clothes, in reference to president-elect Lula, or the surname “da Silva”.
