  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women;

  • Google wants to use artificial intelligence to identify the disease;

  • Technology can help in early diagnosis of the problem.

Breast cancer is the most common type after non-melanoma skin cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. The disease is also what causes the most deaths among women in Brazil.

To help with early diagnosis, Google announced this Wednesday (30) that it has licensed an artificial intelligence (AI) research project to identify the problem.

This is the first time that the idea has gained this commercial dimension, with the aim of improving current resources for detecting diseases of this kind.

The technology should reach clinical settings around 2024, according to information released by Google’s communications manager, Nicole Linton. Commercial implementation depends on the success of ongoing tests that can validate the use of this AI on a larger scale.

This partnership builds on Google’s previous work to improve breast cancer detection. Two years ago, the company’s researchers published an article in the journal Nature, in which they argued that the brand’s AI system surpassed several radiologists in identifying signs of the disease.

The research says that the model reduced false negatives by up to 9.4% and false positives by up to 5.7%, among thousands of mammograms studied.

With the move, iCAD wants to incorporate the technology giant’s research model into the tools already used by the company.

One example is “ProFound AI”, which analyzes images of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), an advanced imaging technique sometimes called “3D mammography”. In practice, the tool scans images to look for soft tissue densities and calcifications looking for malignant changes.
