According to a medical bulletin released by Albert Einstein Hospital, where Pelé has been hospitalized since yesterday (29), the King of Football underwent a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment for the colon tumor identified in September 2021. He is stable, in full control of the vital functions. The statement was sent at 2:40 pm (Brasília time).
“Edson Arantes do Nascimento was admitted to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein yesterday (29) for a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment of the colon tumor identified in September 2021. After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a common room, without the need for hospitalization, in a semi-intensive unit or ICU. The former player has full control of vital functions and stable clinical condition”, wrote the Hospital in the statement signed by the doctors Fábio Nasri, geriatrician and endocrinologist, René Gansl, oncologist, and the superintendent director of medical and hospital services at Albert Einstein Miguel Cendoroglo Neto.
Pelé was diagnosed with cancer in September 2021, while undergoing routine examinations at the same hospital where he is admitted today. At the time he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and returned home after a month. Since then he has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment, having to return to the medical center every month for periodic follow-up examinations. According to the idol’s family, these tests are the reason for his hospitalization this week.
“He’s fine, it’s just the exams that he does at the Einstein. Everything is under control, as far as I know”, reassured his son Joshua Nascimento around 12:00 (Brasília time) today (30th), in response to the UOL Sport🇧🇷
“My father is hospitalized, regulating medication. I’m not jumping on a flight to run there”, wrote daughter Kelly Nascimento on social networks. “My brothers are in Brazil visiting, I’m going there on New Year’s Eve. There’s no surprise or emergency, we appreciate all the affection and love you transmit”, she added.
King has colon cancer
In September 2021, Pelé went to the hospital for his annual routine exams, which were delayed due to the pandemic. During the battery of tests, the doctors discovered a tumor in the right colon, in the region of the large intestine, and so it was decided to have the operation.
The King of Football was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection in February this year, during another round of routine tests. He was hospitalized for two weeks until he was cured and discharged.
Before the cancer, in recent years Pelé had already undergone some surgeries on his hip and other health problems, which made it difficult for him to get around. His son Edinho even said that the limitations would have left the King depressed. In general, since the pandemic, the three-time world champion has reduced his public appearances.
