After 92 years of waiting, Stéphanie Frappart, Neuza Back and Karen Diaz Medina will make history. The women’s trio will be the first to take charge of a men’s soccer World Cup game.

They are going to work on the confrontation scheduled for this Thursday, between Germany and Costa Rica, at the Al Bayt stadium, for the last round of Group E of the World Cup in Qatar.

The only Brazilian in the trio, Neuza Back, was born in Saudades, in western Santa Catarina. The 38-year-old assistant has a degree in physical education and in 2008 completed the arbitration course. She debuted on the lawns in games of the Campeonato Catarinense and due to her prominence, she was already called to work in Série A games of the men’s Brasileirão, in the following year.

The Santa Catarina native was influenced to work in refereeing by her brother André Back, who also worked directing football games.

He joined FIFA’s assistant referee board in 2014 and before making history at the Qatar Cup, he worked at other major international competitions, such as the 2020 Club World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Pioneering spirit is nothing new in Neuza’s career. She was also part of the first all-female team to play in the FIFA Club World Cup and Libertadores and in the 2020 Brasileirão she completed the mark of 100 games for the national championship.

Shortly after the announcement that she would work in the Qatar Cup, Neuza gave an interview on the program Encontro com Patrícia Poeta, and spoke about the feeling when she heard the news from FIFA that she would be part of the body of referees of the most important tournament in the sport.

“When every referee enters the refereeing course, the dream is the World Cup. For me it was no different. Being a woman, it would be a little more difficult. All the choices, all the sensations crossed my mind”, she declared.
