Threatened by boxer Canelo Álvarez in recent days, Lionel Messi responded to the boxer, who accused the Argentine of stepping on the shirt of the Mexico national team after the duel between the teams in the World Cup.
Shortly after the South American victory over Poland this afternoon, which secured Lionel Scaloni’s team in the round of 16 of the tournament, the number 10 said that it was all a “misunderstanding”.
“I think there was a misunderstanding. Anyone who knows me knows I never disrespect anyone. [O que aconteceu] part of any football locker room,” Messi began.
The Argentine still refused to apologize to the boxer precisely because, according to him, he did not practice any kind of contempt in front of the Mexican shirt shortly after the match in question.
“I don’t have to apologize. I didn’t disrespect Mexico’s shirt or anyone else. It stayed there, nothing happened”, concluded the number 10 of the South American selection, which now faces Australia in the qualifiers.
Before today’s match, Canelo Álvarez admitted to having overreacted about the case. Once again on his social networks, the boxer apologized to Messi and said he had let himself be carried away by the passion he has for Mexico.
“Over the past few days, I’ve let myself be carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place. I want to apologize to Messi and the Argentines. Every day we learn something new, and this time it was with me. I wish.” Much success to both teams in their games today. Here we will continue to support Mexico until the end”.
Messi had already been defended even by Andrés Guardado, captain of Mexico. In an interview in the mixed zone yesterday (29), he said he saw nothing out of the ordinary in the Argentine’s attitude. “It’s an agreement with the employees: when you leave everything sweaty on the floor, everything is to be washed. I was lucky and privileged to face Messi for many years in Spain… I know the person he is. Unfortunately, maybe Canelo doesn’t understand what it’s like to be in a locker room”.
“May he pray not to find me”
Right after Argentina 2-0 Mexico, for the 2nd round of Group C of the Cup, Canelo claimed that Messi would have stepped on an opponent’s shirt during the celebration of the players in the Lusail Stadium locker room.
“Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and flag???? May he pray he doesn’t find me!”, wrote the boxer.
In the images, recorded by defender Otamendi, it is possible to see Messi very excited celebrating the victory. When trying to take off his boot, he bumps into Mexico’s shirt. In the sequence, he ends up stepping on part of the uniform when jumping with his teammates.
