It’s official! HBO Max will develop a spin-off series of “City of God” (2002). The announcement was made this Wednesday (30) and the script has already been ordered. If approved, the series will narrate the lives of the characters 20 years after the feature, based on the novel by Paulo Lins.
Those responsible for developing the work are director Fernando Meirelles, of the original feature, partner Andrea Barata Ribeiro and producer O2 Filmes. The screenplay is by Sérgio Machado and the direction is by Aly Muritiba.
“Cidade de Deus” is a work loved by the public and deals with themes that even after 20 years are still extremely relevant both for Brazilians and for audiences anywhere in the world. Therefore, we are starting the development of this project, which, in the future, may come off the drawing board and become an impactful production”, said Silvia Fu, senior director of Scripted Content at Warner Bros. Discovery in Brazil to the press.
The film talks about the growth of organized crime in Cidade de Deus, a community in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. For a long time, the place was considered one of the most violent in the city. The film tells the routine of some characters in the place. Everything is narrated from the point of view of the character Buscapé, played by Wilson Rodrigues. Including Rodrigues, should return to the role, but there is still no information about the interpreters of the other characters.
“Cidade de Deus” led to stardom names like Leandro Firmino, Jonathan Haagensen, Douglas Silva, Alexandre Rodrigues and even Seu Jorge and Alice Braga. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.
