In a new issue of his own magazine, Drew, Drew Barrymore talked about sobriety and reminisced about old ghosts.

The actress, presenter of talk show and mother-of-two said cutting her relationship with alcohol “was one of the most liberating things in my life’s journey” and shared how self-care has been key to her well-being in recent years (via Mother):

Perhaps our definition of love changes throughout our lives, but I truly believe that a lot of love goes out. And it can seem selfish to shine the spotlight on ourselves. Make room for me? Sometimes it just isn’t possible. One of the bravest things you can do is slay these dragons and finally change a terrible cycle you find yourself trapped in. For me, it was quitting drinking.

In the interview, Drew even revealed that this process allowed her to “finally break free from the torture of guilt and dysfunction”. According to her, you need to look inside yourself and seek inspiration to grow in life:

During the holidays, when we expend so much energy trying to meet the perfect standards set by the Norman Rockwells of the world, I’d like you to try to remember to give yourself a break – a hug, whatever – and I’ll try too. Take a moment, breathe and give yourself a squeeze. We’re all just doing our best here. And that in itself is something to celebrate.

It really is a win…
