‘They asked if I’m a porn actress’

Isabelle Costa, a journalist from Rio de Janeiro, who is in Qatar covering the Brazilian team at the World Cup, was chased and harassed by two men on the Doha subway, on her way to the Lusail stadium — where Brazil faces Cameroon, in the last round of Group G. She was asked if she was a porn actress.

“I noticed a different movement of these two men, these guys who were on the subway. They started to record me, without my authorization, I didn’t even know them, they’re not Brazilian. They were recording, laughing. I thought: ‘It must be one more since I will be observed in a different way here’. Until one of them approaches me, showing me a picture of an actress. Asking if I was the porn actress, he started laughing. My reaction was to say that I wasn’t and walk away , very angry. Then mine clicked, I started running after him and recorded it. They realized I was recording and ran away”, said Isabelle to the UOL (see interview above).

The journalist from Rio said that she noticed the strange movement of the boys because they were looking at her nonstop.

“I was coming by subway to the stadium [Lusail]🇧🇷 They were watching me very, very unusually. We women feel when there’s something too much. This time it was really bad. Here we are much more observed, the impression it gives is that they have never seen, never had such strong contact with other women, from outside Qatar”, she said.

Isabelle, who became known on social media covering Flamengo, has been in Qatar for 10 days. She said she has been harassed at least seven times. “It wasn’t the first, nor was it the second, third, fourth. I don’t know, it must have been the seventh time this has happened to me here, I’ve been here for 10 days. It’s very annoying, was my reaction [filmar e denunciar o assédio] also.”

Used to covering games in Brazil, mainly Flamengo, Isabelle Costa said that the situation is different in Qatar. The Brazilian’s impression is that, in the country where they cannot approach women, the men are “crazy” and taking advantage of the World Cup to attack foreigners.

She said that she has only been wearing pants and that she is taking care not to show her shoulders, even to respect the local culture.

“It’s very different from Brazil. And look, Brazil is a much freer country, it’s a country where women have complete freedom. The impression I have is that they are simply crazy. ‘My God, I’ve never seen it, I’m going to on top’, got it?”, he said.

“When I was coming, I was watching other Brazilian girls who were already here and seeing how they were behaving. I didn’t completely change my clothes, with clothes that I wear in Brazil. But I always have a coat on top, with some thing. Also out of respect for their culture. I always wear pants, because you can’t show my legs. And, when I’m wearing a blouse that might show a little bit of my belly, I put something on top,” she explained. .

Currently, the journalist has more than 80,000 followers on social media.
