The person responsible for the physical preparation of the Corinthians squad for 2023 is an old acquaintance of the club: Flávio de Oliveira. The trainer has everything on track to return nine months after being fired upon the arrival of Vítor Pereira.
He had left Corinthians at the end of February, when VP was hired. The Portuguese arrived with his full coaching staff, including physical trainer António Ascensão, so Flávio de Oliveira was sent away at the time.
Physical preparation was a much-discussed topic internally at Corinthians this year, and Vítor Pereira showed dissatisfaction with the work done before his arrival.
In practice, the squad suffered from muscle injuries throughout the season: ten players had more or less serious problems in 2022 (Adson, Bruno Melo, Du Queiroz, Fagner, Lucas Piton, Maycon, Rafael Ramos, Renato Augusto, Robson Bambu and Xavier ).
Oliveira has already passed through Corinthians twice, the first in 2009, and the second between the end of 2020 and the beginning of this year. He was hired on the recommendation of then-coach Vágner Mancini and also worked with Sylvinho, but fell with the arrival of VP.
In the months away from Corinthians, he briefly spent time at Ceará and then at Internacional, at the invitation of Mano Menezes. He left the club from Rio Grande do Sul citing personal issues at the end of the Brasileirão.
Corinthians’ first choice for the position of physical trainer was Fábio Mahseredjian, who is with the Brazilian national team in Qatar and has also worked for the club. He was wanted, but there were disagreements in the negotiation.
In addition to the physical trainer, the coaching staff of Corinthians in 2023 already has two more confirmed: coach Fernando Lázaro and assistant Alex Meschini, a former midfielder. Another two assistants will be announced until the beginning of the pre-season, on the 14th.
