247 – For the first time in the history of the World Cups, countries from six different areas of the globe qualified for the round of 16 of the tournament held in Qatar, the Middle East, a region with parts of Asia and Africa. Europe (8), South America (2), Asia (2), Africa (2), North America (1) and Oceania (1).
The previous record (five different geographic positions) belonged to five World Cups (1994, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014). The cup changed to its current format in 1986, according to information published this Friday (2nd) by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

The eight European teams qualified for the knockout stage: Croatia, Spain, France, Holland, England, Poland, Portugal and Switzerland.
The two in South America were Brazil and Argentina.
