Mbappé breaks silence, says he’s focused and takes on fines from France

Striker Kyllian Mbappé decided another game for France in this World Cup. With two goals and an assist, this time in the 3-1 victory against Poland, at the Al Thumama stadium, in the round of 16, the Frenchman has been increasingly accrediting himself as a champion of the championship. Named man of the match for the third time, he spoke to the press for the first time after a game in Qatar.

The Frenchman explained why he missed the interviews when he had been named man of the match in the wins against Australia (4-2) and Denmark (2-1). For that reason, the French Federation could be fined, but the athlete stated that he will assume responsibility if the charges arrive.

“I heard that the federation would be fined if I didn’t show up, but I said I would pay the fine. I don’t think the federation had to pay for my mistake”, said the player, who still apologized to journalists for his previous absences.

“It’s not personal, I have nothing against journalists, but I needed to focus on the tournament, on my football, and when I want to focus on how I work, that’s why I didn’t want to come and talk to you beforehand”, explained the striker.

Mbappé reached five goals in this World Cup, isolating himself in the top scorer of the competition. However, he stressed that he is not concerned with the Golden Shoe – an award given to the top scorer in the tournament – nor with the Golden Ball – given to the best player in the world each season.

“To be honest, my only objective is to win the World Cup, that’s the only thing I dream of, that’s why I came here, to win the World Cup. Not for the Golden Ball or Golden Boot. If I win I’ll be happy, but I’m not here for that”, said the striker.

Mbappé was already champion with France in 2018, in Russia, when he scored four goals and was one of the main players of the tournament. In Qatar, it has not been different: in addition to five goals, he provided two assists.

Now, France awaits the winner of the duel between England and Senegal to meet its opponent for the quarterfinals of the World Cup. “It’s the competition of my dreams, I’m happy to be here, I want to be ready for this tournament and I want to win the World Cup”, concluded Mbappé.
