Romantic drama “A New Beginning” took the lead in Netflix’s most-watched English-language series for the week, ending the long reign of Ryan Murphy’s thrillers “Dahmer: An American Cannibal” and “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” which alternated at #1 for over a month.
The series starring Zoe Saldaña reached 72 million hours watched in its second week, managing to appear in the Top 10 of Netflix in 84 countries.
“Recomeço” follows an American woman (Saldaña) who falls in love with a chef (rookie Eugenio Mastrandrea) while studying in Italy and later builds a life with him in the United States. Until the traditional twist of books of the genre – look at the whole shelf of Nicholas Sparks’ works – , which involves illness and the need to move on. The difference in this case is that the story is real.
The plot is based on a bestseller written by actress Tembi Locke (from the series “Eureka” and “The Magician”) based on her own life. The adaptation was made by her sister, screenwriter Attica Locke, who wrote episodes of “Empire” and the miniseries “Olhos que Condenam” (When They See Us), and is produced by Zoë Saldaña herself in partnership with Reese Witherspoon (from ” Big Little Lies”).
The most successful debut of the week was the horror anthology “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities”, which took 3rd place with 49.95 million hours viewed.
Between the two titles was “Bem-Vindos à Vizinhança”, with 67.51 million hours watched.
Ryan Murphy’s other series, “Dahmer: An American Cannibal,” came in at No. 5, clocking in at more than 865 million hours watched in the 28 days since launch.
As Netflix only computes the audience for 28 days, this is the final number of the attraction, which represents the 2nd place among the most watched series in English on the platform at all times – behind only the 4th season of “Stranger Things” (1 .3 million hours).
