“Take this camera thing out to see if it doesn’t get better”, said the Bolsonarist during the election campaign.
247 – A confidential study by the São Paulo Military Police concluded that the use of cameras installed in military police uniforms led to a 24% increase in the number of gun seizures and a 102% increase in domestic violence cases, in addition to a 78% increase of cases of drug possession, informs the State of S. Paulo.
The facts call into question one of the campaign promises of the elected governor, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos), critic of the cameras. During the election campaign, Bolsonarista said in Jovem Pan, for example, that the equipment puts police officers “at a disadvantage” and even challenged: “Take that camera thing out to see if it doesn’t get better right away”.
However, the study – commissioned by the command of the PM to the Center for Applied Science in Public Security of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) – attests that the cameras increased the effectiveness of the police in combating the aggressors of women and other criminals.
“Occurrences that used to be underreported are now being registered by the police. It is as if the corporation had adopted a policy of zero tolerance against crime. of police action”, says the report.
Future secretary of Public Security of São Paulo, the re-elected federal deputy and captain Guilherme Muraro Derrite (PL) is another critic of the cameras. According to him, the equipment would inhibit and embarrass the police during their work.
