Eto’o reports harassment and apologizes for attacking a fan

Former soccer player Samuel Eto’o apologized after attacking a fan and youtuber, yesterday (5), on the way out of the match between Brazil and South Korea, in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. Spanish newspaper “La Opinión”, the 41-year-old Cameroonian appears giving a violent kick in the head of an Algerian who was filming him in the vicinity of stadium 974.

The former player, who is also president of the Cameroonian Football Federation and a poster boy for the Qatar Cup, said he has been the target of provocations by Algerians since qualifying for the World Cup.

“My sincere apologies. Last December 5th, after the match between Brazil and Korea, I had a fight with a person who was probably an Algerian fan. I would like to apologize for having lost control and reacted in a way that does not match my personality. I apologize to the public for this unfortunate incident.”

Hired by the Supreme Committee of Qatar, Eto’o has been the face of the World Cup since 2019 and helps promote the World Cup in the press. The report sought out the Supreme Committee for Organization and Legacy, the arm of the government that organizes the World Cup and has Eto’o under contract, but the body preferred not to comment. FIFA was also contacted, but did not respond to the report’s question.

The Qatar Penal Code provides for a penalty of one year in prison, plus a fine, for the crime of assault. The fan attacked by eto’o, O youtuber saduni SM, said on social media that he filed a complaint against the former player.

In the text in which he apologizes for the aggression, Eto’o claims that he has been harassed by Algerians since Cameroon took Algeria out of the World Cup Qualifiers. “I promise to continue resisting the relentless provocation and daily harassment of some Algerian fans. In fact, since the match between Cameroon and Algeria [pelas Eliminatórias Africanas], on March 29th, in Blida, I have been the target of insults and cheating allegations without any evidence. During this Cup, Cameroon fans have been harassed and harassed for the same reason,” added Eto’o.

Cameroon qualified for the Qatar Cup after beating Algeria in the African Qualifiers. The first leg was won by the Algerians by 1-0, but the Cameroonians were victorious by 2-1 in the return duel in a match marked by controversy. The Algerian federation filed an appeal asking for a new game for having felt harmed by the refereeing, but FIFA denied it.

“I want to highlight that the scenario of Algeria’s defeat was cruel, but perfectly within the rules and ethics of our sport. All appeals made by the Algerian federation to the competent jurisdictions were rejected. I therefore call on the authorities and the Algerian federation to take responsibility and put an end to this unpleasant climate before a more serious tragedy strikes. For the Algerian fans, I wish them to find peace and deal with the disappointment of a painful defeat”, concluded the former player.
