Bench against Switzerland, Cristiano Ronaldo refused to train with the reserves of the selection of Portugal this Wednesday morning (7), a day after qualifying for the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar. That’s what the newspaper Marca, from Spain, guarantees, which talks about a ‘rebellion’ by the star player.
“Cristiano Rebellion! The Portuguese stays with the starters in the academy and refuses to train with the substitutes”, says the post in the Spanish newspaper.
This morning (7), the players from Portugal who entered during the rout over Switzerland —in addition to the athletes not used yesterday (6)— participated in a light training led by coach Fernando Santos.
Theoretically, Cristiano Ronaldo should have participated in the activity, as he started the round of 16 duel on the bench and only entered halfway through the second half. CR7, however, followed the starters and stayed at the gym doing exercises.
The match against the Swiss marked Cristiano’s career. It was the first time that the number 7 started a World Cup game on the bench.
In addition, he saw his replacement, Gonçalo Ramos, score three goals, and gave a new dynamic to the Portuguese team — which had its best performance at the World Cup.
The 37-year-old forward came on in the 28th minute of the second half in place of João Félix. He even managed to score, but he was offside at the beginning of the play and the referee annulled the goal.
Even so, CR7 broke another record. He reached 21 games played at World Cups and wrote his name in the top 5 of the players who played the most in the history of the tournament.
