Runners-up in the Russian Cup in 2018, the Croatians see in Brazil an opponent they would rather face later. It is very clear in Croatia that the Brazilian team is favorites for tomorrow’s duel (9), for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar, due to its history and performance in the competition. The intention, however, is to avoid mistakes made by the Serbian team, lose control of the game and “panic”.
“We’ve done a great deal to reach the quarterfinals. We’ll play perhaps the biggest game of the Cup so far. They’re always favourites. For what they’ve done so far, they’re favourites. We have to play our best game and we’ll have a chance. We have our own strength. We have faith ourselves,” said midfielder Modric, a Croatian and Real Madrid star.
Croatia have so far scored five goals in the competition and finished second in the second group, in which Morocco came first. In the round of 16, they qualified in the penalty shootout against Japan. The Croatians see, however, a good performance. But they recognize that the difficulty will be much greater against Brazil.
“I believe that the game at the front will be the most difficult. I can’t compare it with the final [com a França, em 2018]🇧🇷 Brazil is a big challenge. We lost 4-2 to France. I wish there was a game like this [contra o Brasil] shortly after. But that’s life. Croatia is a small country, we can say that there are few teams that manage to reach this [quartas de final]”, analyzed Zlatko Dalic, who already managed Croatia in the 2018 World Cup. He said that Brazil is one of the main favorites of the Cup.
For Modric, the Croatian team also has to overcome the fact of never having beaten Brazil. For this, he asks the team for a whole game and in possession of the ball to reduce the opponent’s pressure.
“We already played against Brazil, we never won, unfortunately. I hope we change the tradition tomorrow. Brazil has incredible players in the middle, in the attack, in the defense. We have to play with intensity, we have to maintain control, we have to be strong and intense ”, described the Croatian star.
Dalic added that Serbia had a good performance to contain Brazil in the first half, in a duel for the first round of the group stage, but then lost concentration.
“It was a good game, Serbia played well. But they got into a trap when they got nervous. And they put themselves in situations that weren’t to their advantage. This game was unique. Serbia couldn’t keep up the pace and they fell in the second half. It’s something we shouldn’t do. We shouldn’t panic and get into conflict with ourselves. We have to wait for the best opportunities. That’s what Serbia was doing until it lost.
