Netherlands and Argentina is one of those games that fill your eyes. In addition to the clash of great players in world football, such as Virgin van Dijk, Memphis Depay, Frenkie De Jong, Ángel Dí Maria and, of course, Lionel Messi, this Friday’s confrontation (9), at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Lusail stadium, puts on the field a historic rivalry in World Cups.
Today’s game is the sixth time that the teams meet in World Cups. The confrontation is relatively balanced, with two wins for the Netherlands, a draw and two wins for Argentina. What matters to the brothers, however, is the context of the two triumphs over Laranja Mecânica, in 1978 and 2014.
At the World Cup in Brazil, eight years ago, Holland and Argentina made the semifinal of the tournament and tied 0-0 in normal time. The game dragged on until penalties, but had a happy outcome for the South Americans, who won on penalties, with Messi crying like never before seen in the national team.
Netherlands and Argentina have already reached the final of the World Cup
In 1978, then, the weight of Argentina’s victory is even greater, as it gave the first World Cup title to our neighbors. In that match, after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, the historic Mario Kempes and Bertoni scored and brought the cup to Buenos Aires.
Four years before the first title in Argentina, the teams faced each other, in Germany, but Laranja Mecânica won with a remarkable 4-0 defeat. The eternal playmaker Johan Cruyff scored two, while Ruud Krol and Johnny Rep expanded.
On the Netherlands side, the highlight triumph was in 1998, in the World Cup in France. In the quarterfinals, as in 2022, the Europeans won 2-1 with a goal by Dennis Bergkamp, in the 45th minute of the second half. Classified, the Dutch stopped in Brazil in the semifinal and lost to the surprising Croatia in the dispute for third place.
In 2006, the duel went through the group stage, as in 1974. However, the selections were unable to clear the scoreboard.
The new confrontation between the teams is scheduled for next Friday, at 4 pm, in Lusail. Those who advance could face Brazil, South Korea, Croatia or Japan in a possible semifinal.
